Heating and Fuel Assistance for Energy Co-op of Vermont Members

Friday, January 25th, 2013

Vermont’s famous January thaw is done. The February freeze appears to have set in … perhaps a bit early! The last week has seen the lowest temperatures of the heating season. And that means heating bills are on the rise. We don’t like to see anyone trying to get through the winter without staying warm enough. So every year, the Energy Co-op works with several state agencies, as well as other organizations to help more than 170 Co-op members who may be challenged, financially or otherwise, to stay warm all winter long.

Every heating season we deliver more than 90,000 gallons of  kerosene and heating oil to the Energy Co-op’s members, in large part, with funds provided by Seasonal Fuel AssistanceCrisis Fuel AssistanceGlobal PartnersCitizens Energy and the Co-op Oil Bank.  For every $12 Co-op membership, we put $2 into the Co-op Oil Bank to help pay for fuel oil deliveries and heating services for Co-op members having trouble paying their bills.

Of course, if your heating equipment isn’t working, then fuel assistance won’t do much! Furnaces and boilers need regular maintenance and servicing to operate efficiently. If you’re having trouble paying for maintenance or a repair on your furnace or boiler, help is available from Crisis Fuel Assistance, the Weatherization Program and Efficiency Vermont.

And even if fuel is in the tank and the heating system is working properly, many Vermont homes are leaky and poorly insulated.  This means money is literally going out the chimney! Fortunately, Vermont’s Weatherization Program helps low-income Vermonters by improving the energy efficiency of their homes. Weatherization typically produces energy savings of at least 30%. According to a recent report by Vermont’s Thermal Efficiency Task Force (TETF), a typical Vermont household could save $1,000 a year with the completion of proper weatherization techniques, such as adding insulation, sealing air leaks, and replacing or repairing heating systems.

The Energy Co-op of Vermont is also proud to offer Free Home Energy Check Ups for our members. This is a great, simple way to see how efficient your home is. If you or someone you know needs financial help with a fuel delivery, repair or maintenance issue, or weatherization, please call the Energy Co-op at (802) 860-4090 or visit any of the resource links above.

Energy Co-op of Vermont Offers Ultra Low-Sulfur Heating Oil That’s Better for the Environment

Monday, September 10th, 2012

Did you know that heating oil contains sulfur, which contributes to acid rain and other types of pollution?  Well it’s true and here at the Energy Co-op of Vermont, we’re concerned about our local environment and our local communities.  That’s the why the Co-op now delivers only clean burning, ultra low-sulfur heating oil.

Heating oil that is delivered in Vermont is allowed by law to have up to 2,000 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur.  But our heating oil contains less than 15 ppm.  That’s over a 100 times less sulfur than what many of our competitors are delivering!  This got us wondering about the environmental costs of different heating fuels – so we decided to look into it.

According to the Brookhaven National Laboratory, the environmental costs of low-sulfur heating oil are among the lowest of any heating fuel.  The table below shows the external costs of various heating fuels in dollars per million BTU’s.  As you can see, low-sulfur heating oil (#2 oil .05 in the chart, 500ppm) actually has a lower environmental cost than natural gas.  Our ultra low-sulfur, heating oil has even less sulfur than #2 oil in this test!

Published in Paper No. 06-03 by the Brookhaven National Laboratory

Using ultra low-sulfur heating oil has other benefits, too.  Furnaces and boilers that burn heating oil with less sulfur require less maintenance and fewer repairs.  This means greater efficiency and lower service bills for our members and customers.  Plus, you end up using less heating oil since its being burned so effectively.

Whether you’re heating oil is low-sulfur or not, the Energy Co-op of Vermont knows that the price of oil fluctuates daily.  In order to help our members deal with this uncertainty for the heating season, we offer several price protection and monthly payment plans, which you can learn more about on our website.  When compared with Vermont’s average prices of heating fuels, Co-op members have saved more than $500,000 on their heating bills since September 2000.

We’ve been able to produce these savings because we manage the Co-op to generate value for our members, rather than foreign investors or a Board of Directors.  Low pricing and ultra low-sulfur heating oil are just a few of the many benefits of becoming a member of the Energy Co-op of Vermont.  Plus, members can expect to save enough money on their heating bills to cover the $12 membership fee many times over!

If you’d like to learn more about the benefits of membership, just hop over to this page on our website.  You can also fill out the simple online application or call (802) 860-4090 to become a member and start saving money and using less oil.  We hope you’ll join us at the Energy Co-op of Vermont, where we’re proud to be Your Local Energy Partner.

Heating Oil Price Protection Plans from the Energy Co-op of Vermont

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

In early July, the Energy Co-op of Vermont rolled out new price protection and monthly payment plans for the upcoming season.  Our plans are designed to protect Co-op members from sky high oil prices and big winter oil bills.

Oil prices are lower than they were last winter, thank goodness – and they may keep falling.  However, one thing is always true;  oil prices are unpredictable and go up and down regardless of popular opinion.

There’s nothing the Energy Co-op of Vermont can do about world energy prices.  But we can make oil bills much easier to manage, and save our members money in the process.

We offer three plans for Energy Co-op Members.

Smart Choice:  Heating oil only, monthly payments, cap price.

The great thing about our Smart Choice plan is that it protects you either way.  You are covered whether prices go up or down.  And because your bills are spread over the course of the year, you avoid getting hit with huge bills in the winter time.  No wonder it is our most popular program.  Co-op members may sign-up on-line.

Easy Pay:  Heating oil and kerosene, monthly payments, discount price.

Our Easy Pay plan comes with the same convenient monthly payments ─ but no price protection.  Instead, our Easy Pay plan includes an 8¢ per gallon discount on every delivery, as long as you stay on the plan and make your monthly payments on time.  If you’re interested in our Easy Pay plan, please call us at (802) 860-4090 for more information.

Pre-Buy:  Heating oil only, fixed price, 400 gallons minimum.

Our pre-buy plan offers certainty during volatile times.  No matter how high – or low – oil prices go, your price for your pre-buy gallons won’t change.  Our pre-buy plan has a 400 gallon minimum purchase requirement.  There is a risk with pre-buy plans.  We learned three years ago that while prices can skyrocket up, they can also plummet down.  If you pre-buy, you will be stuck at the higher rate.  There will be nothing we can do.  Co-op members may sign up for our pre-buy plan on-line.

The Energy Co-op offers several easy monthly payment options with our Smart Choice and Easy Pay plans.  Choose the one that works best for you:

  • you can set up automatic monthly payments with your credit or debit card
  • you can set up a recurring payment from your bank if you have online banking
  • you can use our electronic funds transfer (EFT) service, which authorizes your bank to pay us without you having to write a check, or
  • you can pay from our web site at http://www.ecvt.net/.  You need an email address.

Nothing will make us happier than to see oil prices go down.  But whether that happens or not, our price protection and monthly payment plans will help make things a bit easier for Energy Co-op of Vermont members during the next heating season.

Holiday Hours at the Energy Co-op of Vermont

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Our office will be closed on July 4th and 5th and we won’t be making any oil deliveries on these days.  Nor will we be available for routine service work.

However, if you have an emergency – perhaps you have no hot water, for example – please call us at (802) 860-4090, and our on-call service technician will get right back to you.

Watch your mail box for news about our new Easy Pay and Smart Choice plans for heating oil and kerosene, starting in July.  Our fixed price pre-buy plan for heating oil is also now available.

And if you burn wood pellets, look for information on our new Easy Pay plan for wood pellets – offering monthly payments and no big bills when you get your pellet deliveries.

From everyone here at the Energy Co-op, have a wonderful and relaxing Independence Day.

Energy Co-op of Vermont Now Offering Monthly Payment Plans for Wood Pellets

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

If you’re looking for wood pellets for next winter, we have some good news!

First, wood pellets cost about half as much as heating oil, kerosene or propane, according to the Vermont Fuel Price Report.

Second, the Energy Co-op is now delivering two terrific pellets: LG Granules and Vermont Wood Pellets. Both get rave reviews from our members for their high heat output and low ash content. LG Granules are lower in price. We’ve posted lots of information and testimonials at our new web site.

Third, we know that paying for pellet deliveries can be a challenge. Not everyone can come up with hundreds of dollars for each delivery. That’s why we’ve created our Easy Pay and Fixed Price plans to make it easier for Co-op members to pay for their pellets. Both plans have three valuable benefits:

• Lower bills. We spread your payments out over eleven months so you’re not hit with big pellet bills after each delivery. It’s easier for you to budget and plan.

• Easy payment choices: Cash, money order, check – or automatic monthly payments charged to your credit or debit card. Choose whatever works best for you.

• Free delivery: That’s right. Our prices include delivery anywhere in our service area.

Fourth, your Co-op membership now comes with more benefits. Membership is just $12 a year and offers excellent value – discounts and special offers from local businesses, rewards for recommending us to your friends and neighbors, Co-op Points earned with each pellet delivery, and more.

Co-op members should call us at (802) 860-4090 to get pricing and monthly payment amounts.

Say Goodbye to Big Winter Oil Bills with our Easy Pay Plans

Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

No-one wants to get hit with big oil bills during the winter, especially around the holidays. That’s why we created our Easy Pay plans for Energy Co-op members.

Here’s how they work. We take your estimated oil use through June next year and spread your payments out over eight months, starting in November and ending in June. Many of our members find this an easier and more convenient way to pay for their oil or kerosene. You don’t get a big bill after each delivery; you simply pay the same amount each month.

We’ll send you a statement each month showing payments made, your fuel deliveries and interest earned. That’s right, interest – earned at the rate of 3% a year for each month when you have a credit balance.

To make things even easier, we can charge your monthly payments to your credit or debit card automatically. You don’t need to do a thing.

Our sign up deadline for our Easy Pay plans is November 26, 2010. So don’t delay, call us at 860-4090 today or go to visit our website for more information about our Vermont Home Heating Oil Budget Plans.
