Vermont Wood Pellet Stove Maintenance

Pellet stoves require maintenance. They are more work than oil- or gas-fired heating systems but less than wood stoves. If you want a care-free home heating system, choose furnaces, boilers or space heaters that burn oil, kerosene, propane or natural gas. And then select someone like the Energy Co-op of Vermont to maintain and repair your heating system.

If you want to heat with a local, renewable fuel like wood pellets - and are willing to do some of your own maintenance - you're a good candidate for a pellet stove.

Maintenance is straightforward:

  • Filling the hopper with pellets. Remember, the larger the hopper the less often you'll need to fill it.
  • Emptying the ash pan. To keep your stove working well, you need to remove ash on a regular basis. How often? That depends on how much you use your stove and the quality of the pellets you burn. With LG Granules or Vermont Wood Pellets from the Energy Co-op of Vermont, you'll produce up to five times less ash than with a low quality pellet
  • Occasional cleaning. Removing ash from the heat exchangers, removing any clinkers, cleaning the flue. Because pellet stoves burn so efficiently, even when on low heat settings, there is much less creosote build-up than with a wood stove.

We also recommend an annual service from our technicians to make sure everything's in tip top shape and to clean out any ash or creosote that remains. Call us at (802) 860-4090 for more information.
