Vermont Home Weatherization Saves Energy
Vermont’s Weatherization Program reduces energy costs for about 1,400 low-income Vermont families each year by improving the energy efficiency and comfort of their homes while making sure they’re healthy and safe to live in. The program is very effective, producing total benefits of $5.03 for every dollar spent according to a 2007 report on the program’s impacts.

Weatherization focuses on older Vermonters, people with disabilities and families with children. The program is available for both homeowners and renters who meet the income guidelines. Households are eligible for Weatherization services if their income is at or below 60% of Vermont’s median income. See the program guidelines for more detailed information. The Weatherization process starts with a comprehensive energy audit. This includes a client interview to understand energy and comfort problems, a thorough inspection, health and safety checks on all appliances, a heating system evaluation, a blower door test to look for air leaks and an infrared scan to check on insulation levels. The result is a detailed plan that describes how to save the most energy for a given investment. Highly trained weatherization crews complete the energy retrofit and their work is checked by the local agency.
