Weatherization Spotlight: Buttoning Up a Burlington Home for Winter

On a chilly, rainy day in October, our weatherization team partnered with Efficiency Vermont to kick off this year’s Button Up Campaign, an initiative focused on helping Vermonters stay warm while lowering their energy costs. Our destination: a charming but drafty older home in Burlington that needed some significant upgrades before winter settled in.

Every home has its own story, and for this one, the challenges were clear. Through an energy audit program, the homeowners learned that their house’s energy use was inefficient, with very little, or in some areas, no insulation at all. This meant cold rooms, uncomfortable drafts, and higher-than-necessary heating bills.

That’s where our weatherization crew stepped in.

How We Buttoned Up:

To help this home perform its best, our team completed a comprehensive upgrade that included:

  • Insulating the attic for better heat retention
  • Adding insulation to previously uninsulated walls
  • Sealing and insulating the basement and crawl spaces to stop cold air infiltration

By addressing all the major areas of the building envelope, we set the foundation for improved comfort and long-term energy savings.

Collaboration That Strengthens Our Work:

We’re proud to work alongside organizations committed to helping Vermonters save energy. We have been part of the Efficiency Excellence Network since 2013, a partnership that has helped our members save thousands of dollars on important energy upgrades. For this project, Vermont Gas Systems & the Button Up Campaign brought in a weatherization expert to provide hands-on training and refresh our team on the latest cellulose best practices, from dense-pack wall insulation to attic air sealing techniques.

Our expert team continues to benefit from on-the-job training like this collaboration to ensure our members always receive top-quality work rooted in current industry standards.

Weatherization is often the first step in the energy-efficiency journey because a well-sealed, well-insulated home allows every other heating and cooling system to work more effectively. This project is a great example of how collaboration, training, and the right upgrades can transform a home. We’re here to help Vermonters live better, staying warmer in the winter, using less energy, and knowing their homes are ready for whatever the future brings.

We serve all of Chittenden County and parts of Grand Isle, Franklin, Lamoille and Washington Counties.
