When Should I Replace My Heating System?

A Vermont Homeowner’s Guide to Reliable Winter Comfort

If you’re a member of the Energy Co-op of Vermont, you know one thing for sure: winter here isn’t just cold, it lasts a long time. Our heating systems, water heaters, and oil tanks work harder and longer than most places. That’s why knowing when to replace your heating equipment matters, not just for comfort, but for safety, efficiency, and future savings.

In this guide, we’ll walk through how to tell if it’s time to replace elements of your heating system, what to look for, and what steps you can take next with the Energy Co-op of Vermont.

When should I replace my Furnace or Boiler?

Vermont’s long heating season puts added wear on oil and kerosene systems, and over time, a few common indicators can signal when replacement planning makes sense.

Your Oil or Kerosene Furnace or Boiler may be ready for replacement if:

  • It is over 20 years old
  • You’ve had frequent repairs in recent winters
  • Your heating bills keep climbing
  • The parts needed are hard to find or increasingly expensive

Even if your system is still working, equipment at this age can be less efficient and more costly over time. If you are looking for a new furnace or boiler, reach out to our HVAC service team today.

When should I replace my Ductless (Cold-Climate) Heat Pump?

Ductless Heat pumps that are designed for cold climates, like the Mitsubishi heat pump systems, are a fantastic year-round solution in Vermont.

When it’s Time to Consider a Heat Pump Replacement:

  • The unit is 12–15+ years old
  • You notice repeated defrost cycles or ice buildup
  • Repairs involve compressors, controls, or refrigerant work

With proper annual maintenance, many systems make it to the high end of that lifespan, but proactive planning keeps your home comfortable when it matters most.

When Should I replace my Water Heater or Heat Pump Water Heater?

Most water heaters last 10–15 years, but Vermont’s cold groundwater and seasonal humidity stress the tank over time.

Signs to Replace Your Water Heater:

  • The tank is 10+ years old
  • You see rust, corrosion, or moisture around the base
  • Hot water runs out quickly
  • You hear rumbling or popping sounds

If your water heater isn’t keeping up, we’ll assess its condition and help you consider upgrading to a heat pump water heater. Our team can help you determine the right model and replacement for efficiency and comfort.

When Should I Replace My Indoor Oil Tank?

Steel indoor tanks can last ~20–25 years in Vermont, but can fail without obvious warning signs.

When to start planning for your Indoor Oil Tank upgrade:

  • The tank is 20+ years old
  • There’s visible rust or pitting
  • You’ve been advised of internal corrosion
  • You’re planning other system upgrades

Schedule an oil tank inspection with your next tune-up.  We inspect tanks on every service visit and can help you plan safe, compliant replacement when the time is right.

When should I replace my Outdoor Oil Tank?

Outdoor tanks face weather, freeze–thaw cycles, and moisture,  which can shorten their lifespan.

When it’s time to replace your Outdoor Oil Tank:

  • 10-20+ years old, depending on tank material
  • Rust, bulges, or corrosion
  • Snow and moisture are pooling around the base
  • Older steel tanks are nearing our past 10 years

The Co-op’s team installs new oil tanks built for Vermont winters and compliance, helping you avoid leaks and costly cleanups.
