“No more winter hats during dinner.”
In 2010, Justin and Kimberly Brown purchased a mid-19th century, 4,000 sq. ft. home in Fairfax. The house had sat vacant for three years.After trying a few “piece-meal” improvements on their own, the Browns called the Energy Co-op for an energy audit. “Paul is a wizard,” says Justin. “He not only gave us a full report, but also recommended options and priorities on improvements and weatherization projects that would give us the best return on our investment. We secured a Heat Saver Loan that allowed us to go ahead with all the recommended improvements.”
The Browns added cellulose insulation in the basement and exterior walls, and installed an efficient, full-house cord wood gassifier heating system, with a (rarely used) oil furnace as back up. The old propane hot water heater was replaced with a heat pump hot water heater.
When the Brown’s first moved into the house, they wore winter hats to stay warm during their evening meals. Today, they celebrate their energy efficient historic home with both warm hearts and warm heads!
